[SBB] Mtn. View salt pond A2W

This morning, 2/2/2007, Roland Kenner and I walked along the southern edge
of salt pond A2W in Mountain View. There were quite a few ducks on the pond
close enough to scope well. We had 7 sightings of male EURASIAN WIGEONs
with at least 5 different individuals. There was one pair of REDHEADs in
the middle of the pond. There was one SNOW GOOSE among CANADA GEESE on one
of the levees separating A1 and A2W.

One interesting duck on A2W seemed to be a male Mallard hybrid. The flanks
looked like mallard, but the edge of the folded wing wasn't dark; there was
a mallard-like dark streak down the middle of the back. The breast was
smudgy dark brown, poorly delineated, with no white ring around the neck.
The head was dark with glints of mallard green in good light, with a brown
patch below the eye ending in a lighter, almost tan, spot behind and below
the eye. The bill was dark with light edges. We guess it to be a hybrid
with a Gadwall (a "Brewer's Duck").

Take care,

Pat Kenny
