Today, Aug. 27, I parked at the VTA lot off Coleman Rd. across from Lake
Almaden and walked north past freeway 85 and back. I looked for the
Wilson's Snipe but didn't see them. Dozens of Barn Swallows were perched
on overhead wires near the light rail station. Adult and immature Hooded
Orioles and Yellow Warblers were feeding in the willows and oak leaf
cherry bushes along the creek. A pair of Nutmeg Mannikin's and 2 Common
Yellowthroat males were seen with more heard. The *Willow* *Flycatcher
*was perched near the trail for a much closer look today. Two male
Belted Kingfishers were ripping up and down the creek as usual. My first
fall Am. Goldfinch was also seen today.
*
A** MacGillivrays Warbler* was giving a loud chip call as I left
through the gate to the VTA parking lot. It was feeding in a waxy leafed
plant behind Coyote Brush, close to the apartment building. A soft
repeated shree shree shree song would follow each chip call. It had a
gray hood and flanks, yellow undersides and greenish gray upperparts.
The absence of wing bars and its white eye arcs defined this bird for me.
