I was there this morning (Saturday, August 11), too. I watched the
Black Skimmers on the second island for 45 minutes. During that time,
the adults flew four times to chase away egrets and gulls. They also
sometimes walked out to the edge of the 10-yard perimeter that you
mentioned.
My photos of these skimmers are at the usual place:

There were also two skimmers on the first island. They stayed put for
the most part, but I did see one fly around once. Last night at sunset
there were three flying around the first island, and one staying put.
I suspect that the extra two were from the second island.
After Frank showed me the two Black Terns in his telescope this
morning, I walked out towards the third island and found them on two
different perches. One was a crossbar, but the other was a low,
square, floating object.
