[SBB] Stevens Creek at L'Avenida - 8/11/07

All,

This morning 8/11/07, I birded Stevens Creek from Highway 101 to the
Crittenden Lane bridge. Few dispersing birds/migrants were about, with a
single PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER and chip notes from a BUNTING
(presumably Lazuli) hidden in the grasses at the end of L'Avenida being
all I could find. Breeding is still happening, with fledgling LESSER
GOLDFINCHES, HOUSE FINCHES, and CALIFORNIA TOWHEES feeding young
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS being somewhat expected. More surprising was an
AMERICAN ROBIN nest with mid-sized young (still mostly unfeathered and
eyes closed); this is 2.5 weeks later than the latest nest in the atlas
and postatlas databases and hopefully should produce dependent
fledglings well after the current latest date of 23 August.

Otherwise, birds of note included a PEREGRINE FALCON, 4 species of
SWALLOWS, 4 species of HERONS/EGRETS, and 4 WHITE-THROATED SWIFTS.
Surprising was a complete lack of Mallards in the creek (normally there
are 20-30 here) - perhaps they moved downstream to larger water bodies
to molt.
