On Thursday, 9 August, Kay Partelow & I met in the kite flying area of Shoreline Park, Mountain View, and walked to where Stevens Creek meets San Francisco Bay. Dozens of CANADA GEESE where munching loudly on the grass of the kite flying area while a BURROWING OWL watched from up the hill. A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE perched on a stick.
The bridge over the marsh provided stunning looks of BARN SWALLOWS perched on the reeds; we were hoping to see rails with the low tide, but no luck (no rail footprints either). In addition to the Barn Swallows, there were also VIOLET GREEN and CLIFF SWALLOWS flying above. The bridge over Stevens Creek had views of MALLARDS and a BLACK PHOEBE.
Towards the bay we saw 1 BROWN PELICAN fly over, and over 100 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS sitting on a boardwalk under the power towers. A couple of RED-TAILED HAWKS and a TURKEY VULTURE soared above, and FOSTER'S TERNS were busy fishing, flying by with shiny small silver fish in their beaks.
There were a couple of distant Phalaropes in poor lighting among GREAT EGRETS, BLACK-NECKED STILTS and Yellowlegs, and a GREAT BLUE HERON flew past.
At the mouth of Stevens Creek we saw a couple of WESTERN SANDPIPERS in the mud flats, and several Jack Rabbits on the gravel road. There were a few RUDDY DUCKS near the hunter blinds.
Wishing you good birding,
Karen DeMello
