All,
On July 17, 2007 I found a grosbeak in the Pajaro River area in Gilroy which I ID'ed as a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak because of the contrasting white supercilium and dark crown and the coarse streaking on its underparts which I thought my and Bob Reiling's pictures showed went across the breast. Mike Rogers, Mike Mammoser and Steve Rottenborn have been having an interesting discussion questioning its identity. The ID has been questioned because the overall fresh plumage seems to rule out an adult at this time of year and because RBGRs are not known to breed in the area it would seem highly unlikely a HY bird. Yesterday and today Mike R and Mike M posted a couple of e-mails in which they were inclined to identify the grosbeak as a Black-headed Grosbeak. Bob R also weighed in. Rather than running the risk of misquoting them please refer to their e-mails.
Beacuse most of you haven't seen the pictures taken by myself and Bob Reiling, I put some of the the pictures on Shutterfly :

Just click on "View Pictures."
Tom Grey took another picture of the grosbeak and it is at:

It's the fourth picture on the right.
If anyone can add to the discussion of the identity of this grosbeak, please do. Any helpful comments would be appreciated.
Peggy Don
