Quite a few people have asked for directions to the good birding area on
the Pajaro River off Hwy 101.
Take Hwy 101 south. After the Hwy 25 turnoff to Hollister, you have a
couple miles across the flat farmland of the Pajaro River valley, after
which you cross the railroad tracks on an overpass, putting them on your
right. Get in the right lane, slow down, and signal right turn. There's an
unmarked turnoff to a paved strip of frontage road. Take that south until
you get to the closed gate, and park. The railroad tracks are just west of
you across a ditch. To reach the river, walk south along the tracks, then
follow them as they swing west along the north bank of the river. This
year's good birds have been in the first few hundred yards along the
tracks, before the 1/2 sign, which is as far as I've walked, though I
believe you can go a good deal further. The closed gate where you park is
posted, but the RR right-of-way is not. Note, these tracks are in use, so
if you actually walk or stand on the tracks, stay alert for trains.
Coming from the south, take 101 north to the Hwy 25 turnoff, and use the
overpass to access 101 south.
