Hi Birders-
Amazing sight this evening on salt pond A16,
probably already witnessed by some. I walked up to the pond around 6:15. Two
days of high winds out of the W-NW have pushed most of the algae into the SE
corner of the pond, creating a mat at least an acre in size and sturdy enough to
support all but the larger birds. It was reminiscent of an avocado shag rug out
of the seventies. Yuck. It was swarming with Black-necked Stilts and Forster's
Terns. Among them were the Black Tern and a few Bonaparte's Gulls. Also there
were a handful of dowitchers, Greater Yellowlegs, Least Sandpipers, and Snowy
Egrets. Only a few Western Sandpipers and one Great Egret. In total there
were hundreds of birds on the mat. The Black Tern was hanging in the
wind often near the levee, while the Bonaparte's Gulls chose to walk on the
mat. The Black Skimmers had their privacy invaded by hordes of terns and
gulls roosting on the island. Yesterday evening the mat was actually larger but
very few birds were on it. It appears to have been compressed over the last day.
