Late morning today (Aug. 5) I walked out the levee between salt pond
A16 and the New Chicago Marsh, and also checked the boardwalk area.
There were over 200 Least Sandpipers, but I didn't find any of yesterday's
more unusual species (Pectoral or Semipalmated Sandpiper) with them
(and just a few Western), nor did I see the Black Tern. But the walk
did hold a reward: the Black Skimmer pair on the second island now
have two very small chicks. For a while, one adult would make skimming
excursions, and when it returned the young would emerge from under the
brooding adult to be fed. Eventually, the adults swapped positions,
but the now-free adult (I think it was the male) just hung around
rather than fishing. The other pair continues at the nest on the first
island.
