All,
Early this morning (8/5) Frank Vanslager and I caught the falling tide
at the mouth of Stevens Creek where we eventually had large numbers of
sandpipers which included good numbers of RED KNOTS (33+ during
an early count) and one very darkly marked adult breeding plumaged eastern
WILLET. Salt Pond A2E had large numbers of AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS, Egrets and Gulls in it (there didn't seem to be a feeding frenzy,
just hundreds and hundreds of birds). Unfortunately the only LEAST
TERNS seen there were flying on the far southern edge of the pond. There
didn't seem to be any room for them on the elevated wooden walkways.
Later, in New Chicago Marsh near the junction of the railroad tracks, we
had a pugnacious juvenile SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER that would not let LEAST
SANDPIPERS anywhere near its little island north of the tracks. As we were
leaving a juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON made several unsuccessful passes over
various flocks in the marsh before heading further
west.
Take care,
