Laurie and I walked around shoreline lake and charleston slough this evening. It was low tide, so there was lots of mud exposed.
Lots of shorebirds. LOTS... I counted 250+ peeps and over a hundred killdeer tonight, plus whimbrel, some marbled godwits, and things I won't pretend to identify until I can look at the photos and a guide book... but it was amazing to see a flock of birds fly in that I thought were peeps, take a close look with the binocs, and realize they were killdeer.
Saw the scoters, didn't see the loon. Did see a stilt pair down across the path from the lake where I'd seen them nesting before, and they had a new chick, so I'm wondering if they had a second round -- the chick was only a couple of days old. Terns carrying fish, and newly fledged terns (and avocets) wandering around. Very busy evening overall, the summer doldrums definitely seemed over...
