Today, Mon. Apr. 23rd, I made a pretty good sweep of our local
hummingbirds. This morning at the Ed Levin Dog Park in Milpitas, I saw
multiple ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS, 1 male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD and the male
CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD. (To Bill B. - I believe the bush they are all
visiting is one of the Euphorbias). This afternoon, following Mike
Rogers's directions, I went looking for BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRDS
along Guadalupe Creek north of Curtner in San Jose. I found 1 female
duking it out with a female Anna's across from the entrance to the
River Glen trailer park and 1 male on a TV aerial guy wire on the house
just south of the trailer park. Also feeding in the tree-bushes with
big white flowers was 1 female-type ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD. Anyone have a
Costa's Hummingbird?
Also along Guadalupe Creek I found an Anna's Hummingbird nest, no eggs
yet, nestled low in the brambles and a pair of DOWNY WOODPECKERS
perhaps changing the guard at a nest hole in a snag across the creek.
At Ed Levin, there were also two GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS just beyond the
large curve in the trail beyond the sycamores. They were up on the
fence downhill from the trail and one was doing the
wing-fluttering-tail-up display. Also heard another Grasshopper Sparrow
singing up the hill from this point.
