All,
On the way into work this morning 4/23/07, I looked for migrants along
Stevens Creek between Highway 101 and Crittenden Lane. I found 4 to 5
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, 3 WILSON'S WARBLERS, 1 PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER,
1 WARBLING VIREO, and 1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. Both HOODED and
BULLOCK'S ORIOLES were also seen. Lingering winter birds were still very
much in evidence, with 32+ GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, 1 FOX SPARROW, 6+
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS (including 1 singing adult male that appeared
intermediate between AUDUBON'S and MYRTLE) and 1 HERMIT THRUSH.
Biggest surprise was a SOLITARY SANDPIPER foraging leisurely on the mud
bank just south of the Crittenden lane bridge. Also of note was a pair
of GREEN-WINGED TEAL under the high tension line crossing. Precocial
young MALLARDS and KILLDEER were also seen this morning.
