[SBB] Ed Levin, Baylands

Yesterday (4.21) a clear sky at sunrise lured me out, but after I made a
quick stopover at the entry road to Edwards NWR in Alviso (Avocet photo),
it was completely overcast by the time I got to Ed Levin, putting the
kibosh on further early morning photography. As a result, I didn't bother
to walk up to the sycamores. But I did see two LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH where
previously reported, by the hang-glider parking lot -- and there also a
number of BULLOCK'S ORIOLES and a WESTERN KINGBIRD. At Elm Parking lot, I
flushed a GREAT HORNED OWL and heard a singing YELLOW WARBLER toward the
back. A flock of WILD TURKEYS was on the golf course. (The trail leading
west from the corral at the south part of the of park has been closed, by
the way. Plenty of Tree Swallow activity in around the nestboxes there.)

I went to Baylands for the later part of the morning, by which time the
overcast was a boon rather than a hindrance to photography. The main event
there was provided by two evidently unfledged nestling BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERONS which were on the ground inside the fenced enclosure. I have
photos of them, including of one of them actually carrying a large twig!
I'm sure folks will monitor their perilous course over the next days. One
Snowy Egret was particularly active at nest-building, with constant trips
between ground and palm tree, carrying twigs (photo).
