[SBB] The Nestlings are out!!

Yesterday we joined Ted Chandik's Fly By Dawn group for a visit to several
bay birding spots. The most striking thing was the number of baby birds we
saw-from the platoon of 12 goslings guarded by the parents which we saw at
the second on Radio road (which AL Eisner had documented as 13 in PEN birds
the day before) to the baby Black-crowned Night Herons at the Palo Alto
Duck Pond. I want to share with you the 2 goslings and a parent which I
photographed at the duck
pond http://www.pbase.com/merigan/image/77555720/original and the pair
of baby Black-crowns who had left the nest probably in search of food and
looked quite lost http://www.pbase.com/merigan/image/77556048/original
. I also saw the latter attacking a parent in the nest for food in a
series of 2 shots

reminiscent of a series of shots I took the year before last of babies
fighting among them selves for food in the nest, also now in my Black-
crowned gallery. So,the takeaway message is life is tough for these
youngsters-be it the missing gosling or the food fighting herons.
