[SBB] Varied Twitchers Big Day

All,

The 2007 Varied Twitchers (Richard Jeffers, Mike Mammoser, Bob Nansen, Jim Thomas, and Mike Rogers) did our spring Big Day today 4/21/07. Despite a few missed species, we had a very good start. However, once the wind and rain hit things got tough, and we added only 2 species in the last 2.5 hours :( Still the day's preliminary total is 163 species, our second best in the five years we have done these "guided" Big Days.

More details will follow, but the main highlights were:

1) American Bittern - Emily Renzel Wetlands
2) Ross's Goose - Emily Renzel Wetlands
3) Bald Eagle - pair at nest near Calaveras Reservoir
4) Merlin - Page Mill Road
5) Glaucous Gull - 2nd island in Salt Pond A16 near the EEC in Alviso, also a "Nelson's" Gull (Glaucous x Herring Gull hybrid) here
6) Calliope Hummingbird - 2 males and 1 female at the purple cone-shaped flowers (and nearby eucalyptus) along the fence surrounding the dog run above Sandy Wool Lake at Ed Levin Park (by trail to sycamore grove)
7) Varied Thrush - 1 singing near 1.5 mile marker down Canyon Trail at Monte Bello OSP

plus a great mix of lingering (ducks, gulls, sparrows) and recentlyly arrived (Olive-sided Flycatcher, Western Wood-Pewee, Yellow Warbler) species.
