I just, at 7:15 this evening, had 3 sparrows, all adults in breeding
plumage, in my yard at the same time, within inches of each other:
One WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, one GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, and one WHITE-
THROATED SPARROW (white-striped variety). Unfortunately it was too
dark for a photo... they would have all fit in one shot!
It is interesting to note that the white stripes (supercillium and
median crown-stripe) on the head of the white-crowned and the white-
throated sparrow are different in that on the white-crowned sparrow
they run parallel and do not meet at the back of the head, whereas
on the white-throated sparrow the supercilliium stripes converge
towards the center of the back of the head, although they don't quite
meet.
