This evening Kay Partelow and I went on a short walk along the lake at Shoreline Park in Mountain View. Highlights included the chattering of a BULLOCK'S ORIOLE against the simultaneous rattling of a BELTED KINGFISHER; we got good looks at both males. Grebes included the HORNED (a ratty transitional plumage, but still with white cheeks), EARED (further along with their breeding plumage with golden feathers fanning out behind the eye), CLARK'S, and PIED-BILLED. DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were showing off their thick white feathery eyebrows while holding out their wings.
Along the edge of Shoreline Lake there were beautiful SNOWY EGRETS, a couple of WILLETS, a GREATER YELLOWLEGS and a MARBLED GODWIT. FORSTER'S TERNS dove straight into the water, hoping for a meal. Nearby male SURF SCOTERS, with their eyes that look like white sewed-on
buttons, did a display dance, running away across the water while
making a soft sound. Very eye catching, if I do say so myself!
Meanwhile on land behind us, the WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW seemed to be in an American Idol competition with a BEWICK'S WREN atop a tree, with each taking turns singing over and over. On the ground, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS foraged, as well as CALIFORNIA TOWHEES and a stunning HERMIT THRUSH.
Wishing you good birding,
Karen DeMello
