All,
Today 4/3/07, I made a couple of quick stops at Santa Clara County areas along Skyline Blvd near Highway 9. Near the Castle Rock parking area I saw a pair of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES near milepost 11.34 and another right at the parking area on the northeast side of the road (about mp 11.5). I also got great looks at a calling and foraging female PILEATED WOODPECKER at this latter location. GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS were singing here as well.
1.4 miles north of Highway 9 near Charcoal Road (milepost 15.47), I saw another vocal RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH at the start of the Hickory Oaks Trail at gate LR01. A brilliant male AUDUBON'S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was singing from just north of the road here (known breeding location), as was a PURPLE FINCH and a CASSIN'S VIREO. The first hundred yards of Charcoal Road added another singing CASSIN'S VIREO and 2 singing WARBLING VIREOS.
Gorgeous weather and views from up top today!
