Re: [SBB] New Chicago Marsh

Folks

I saw a juvenile Baird’s Sandpiper from the access road to the EEC today. It was on the New Chicago Marsh side, about ¾ down the road before it bends to the left. This seems rather late in the season to me.

Bob, Dunlin molt up north before they migrate down. The juveniles sometimes have dense black spotting below, even on the belly. Either an adult showing black on the belly or a fresh juvenile would be unusual here, any idea which age it was?

Cheers

Al

All,

This morning Frank Vanslager and I clockwise circumnavigated New Chicago Marsh; we had all three of the closely associating RUFFS on the east side of the RR tracks out where the tracks curve left opposite the point of land on the west side of the tracks.  [Gimpys limp seems to be less obvious than when originally found.]  We also had three to four WILLSON'S PHALAROPES in the pond adjacent to the Spreckles Ave "hill" and the large numbers of Ducks and Gulls in Salt Pond A13 included to 40-50 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.  Four DUNLIN [one with a lot black on the belly] were in a pond seen southwest of the curve in the EEC boardwalk.  The last notable of the day was a PEREGRINE FALCON in the second power tower east of the RR tracks along the EEC entrance road.

Take care,

Bob Reiling
