At lunchtime today, 9/28/06, in Alviso there were several good birds around. From the rise in Spreckles St., there were two RUFFs seen on the mud island to the east. Neither was the limping bird, which I have not seen in several days now.
In the last pond that you pass on the entry road to the EEC there was a PECTORAL SANDPIPER foraging. Fortunately for me, this bird was foraging with a LEAST SANDPIPER and provided a great comparison of the two.
At the EEC in the trees along the creek were several warblers. Most interesting was a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, but there were also YELLOW WARBLERs and COMMON YELLOWTHROATs present. I saw two PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERs in the area. Sparrows are around. While I didn't see them today, there were several FOX SPARROWs present a couple of days ago in the butterfly garden area.
In other, out-of-area news, the last two mornings there have been thousands of "white" birds in the
ponds north of HWY 84 heading for the Dumbarton Bridge. I estimated a hundred WHITE PELICANs, hundreds of terns, egrets, and all sorts of other birds are feeding in these ponds. I cross the Dumbarton Bridge occasionally on my commute and have for the last five years. This phenomenon seems to occur for about a week long period each fall. I'd be interested to know if anyone knows any details about what food source these birds are finding.
