I birded at the Santa Clara Valley Water District on Almaden Ex. for
three hours this morning. I told myself as long as I'm seeing new species
I'd continue. My first bird was a Willow Flycatcher which flew
past me and perched in a Willow in the south east corner of the main
pond. I was on the east side of the property along the river channel at
the time. A Fox Sparrow was right where Ann and I saw him last Sunday.
The Willows were dripping with Yellow Warblers, and I quit looking for
them at 22. Singing White-crowned Sparrows and Yellow-rumped Warblers
were seen and heard along the east side and down the gravel road to the
north. I saw one beautiful male Audubons Yellow-rumped Warbler. Two
Orange-crowned Warblers and 2 Golden-crowned Sparrows were seen from the
gravel road. Common Yellowthroats were even more numerous than YWAR, with
many seen and more heard.
The male Black-throated Gray Warbler was still in the big Sycamore
tree at the N. E. side of the property across from the dam. He was quiet
today, and I had to give a few chip calls to located him. He responded
and was low enough for me to see the yellow lore. A Spotted Sandpiper
was on the wooded wall near the dam. The north side was rather quiet
except for the YWAR. I found a Say's Phoebe in the fenced field.
Also seen today were Belted Kingfisher and Am. Kestrel. Persistence paid
off and I finally saw a Marsh Wren. They have been scarce here the past
few years. As I was leaving one Vaux's Swift was seen flying with
7 Violet Green Swallows. Finally, three Ruddy Ducks evidently flew
in last evening and were seen at the west side of the main pond.
