Hi all:
Thursday a.m. we had a female Taiga-type Merlin in the
Redwood tree that watches over the preserve. Patty
Brown and I were able to enjoy extended looks. As the
Merlin stayed perched and alert, a dark swift swung
above it and wide left and tantalizingly swung back
out of view. The 3-second look was just a big tease.
I'll call it swift species and leave it at that. Five
wood ducks flew overhead wheezing at us, and Patty had
a Townsend's Warbler a 100 yards downstream from the
parking area, also first of fall (o.k., that's not
'til tomorrow night at 9) for the preserve.
C'mon over and visit now......
Good birding,
Bob Power
McClellan Ranch, Cupertino
also, completely way, way overdue, my apologies: On
Monday 9/18, in Alviso I had a Ruddy Turnstone at salt
pond A16 in the southwest corner. The bird flushed
into the nw corner of new Chicago Marsh for good
views, and then took off northwest and I lost it over
A13, which was housing hundreds of red-necked
phalaropes, and at least two eared grebes, one in
alternate plumage. bp
