After stopping at the Santa Clara Valley Water District ponds to look for the Brewer's Sparrow (which I missed), I ran into Bill Bousman, who told me of a Blackpoll Warbler he had found at Sunnyvale Baylands Park. So, I headed over there.
Shortly after arriving there and looking through some YELLOW WARBLERS, I spied a couple birds in the cottonwoods near the intersection of the 2 dirt paths. One was an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and the other was a TENNESSEE WARBLER (a county life bird for me). After watching it for a few minutes, it flew to the eucalyptus trees behind me, where I lost track of it.
I continued searching for the Blackpoll, succeeding only after causing a mob scene. A juvenile COOPER'S HAWK had flown in to the trees, but I paid it little heed. As I walked the line of cottonwoods, I began to pish, and the response from above me was quite vociferous. I had actually begun my pishing right below the
hawk, unknowst to me, and the birds responding to it found the hawk and set up a cry, bringing in all the birds in the area. I was watching a cloud of about a dozen hummingbirds and a dozen warblers just floating around the Cooper's, as it jerked its head all around looking at the commotion. I searched through the gathered warblers and found the BLACKPOLL, which had joined in the fun.
After leaving to send an email, I returned and continued searching for a couple hours with other people, refinding the BLACKPOLL WARBLER, but failing to refind the Tennessee. People were still there after I left, so other reports may be more positive.
