This morning 9/11/2006, it took more than an hour
of quiet waiting at the little pond at Monte Bello preserve's gate 5 pond for
anything significant to develop (the continuing Soras, Pileated
Woodpecker, and Green Heron notwithstanding).
Shortly after sunrise things finally picked
up. A large, dark flycatcher making looping flights from the tip of a nearby
snag allowed a fairly close approach and turned out to be an Olive-sided
Flycatcher. A Chipping Sparrow in winter plumage popped up in the willows.
Later, a small flock of sparrows in the coyote brush produced two Lincoln's
Sparrow and 2 Savannah Sparrows associating together.
A Ruby-crowned Kinglet in the willows was my
first-of-fall (it flew near a pair of Hutton's Vireos for a helpful comparison,
and was also good enough to issue its rattling call.)
Good birding everyone,
Garth Harwood
