Good
Morning,
For more than a week
now at the intersection of Elizabeth and Hope Sts in Alviso there has been an
amazing congregation of swallows. The best time for viewing seems to be
around noon when the majority of the flock tends to be settling on the
powerlines around the intersection. A very rough estimate is that about
80% are Barn Swallows, 15% Violet Greens, and the remaining 5% is a mix of Tree
Swallows and Northern Rough-winged Swallows. Also not settling on the
lines, but present none-the-less are many swifts the majority of which are
Vaux's, but with an occasional White-throated present. Admitting my
inexperience in estimating the number of birds in a swarm of swallows I would
say there are times when there are close to 500 birds present. Also, Mike
Mammoser posted a Bank swallow that he saw a couple of days ago. I have
looked every day during the peak powerline settling time and have not seen it
again, although I would be surprised if we didn't find more bank swallows if the
flock sticks around. I thought I would let everyone know in case there are
some Hirundinidae lovers out there who would like to see the
spectacle.
