Kay Partelow and I hiked at Long Ridge OSP on Saturday
evening. We heard Great Horned Owl on the way up to
the ridge. These calls/hoots were much closer than
those that we heard previously from the ridgetop.
We returned on Sunday to investigate a pile of
Pileated Woodpecker feathers. Some of the feathers had
been plucked, and some clipped. There were various
feathers, including parts of tail and wing and some
which were still in their sheath. We checked around
the area and under nearby trees, but couldn't find any
body parts. The pile was in an open grassy area.
On a previous hike, we had found Steller's Jay
feathers, more scattered than this pile but in the
same general area.
