South Bay Birders,
This morning (3 Sep) I started birding at Sunnyvale Baylands Park. Lots of
migrants, including single Black-chinned Hummingbird (female or HY male),
Chipping Sparrow, Willow Flycatcher, and Lazuli Bunting, plus 35+ Yellow, 2
Townsend's, 1 Wilson's, and 3 Orange-crowned Warblers, 15 Western Tanagers,
7 "Western" Flycatchers, and 2 Western Wood-Pewees. The Sunnyvale WPCP had
80+ Vaux's Swifts foraging with 350 Violet-green, 150 Barn, and 40-60 each
of Cliff and Tree Swallows. The WPCP ponds had 1800 Ruddy Ducks and similar
numbers of Northern Shovelers, as well as 80 Red-necked Phalaropes and an
adult Peregrine Falcon. The fennel patch between the old landfill and the
Yahoo building had a House Wren and 1 Orange-crowned and 5 Yellow Warblers.
A check of New Chicago Marsh in Alviso turned up nothing unusual in the way
of waterbirds, but an HY Lawrence's Goldfinch was with American and Lesser
Goldfinches in the weedy field on the southwest corner of State and
Spreckles. Twenty Vaux's Swifts were foraging with swallows here.
I then birded the Guadalupe River between Montague Expwy. and Trimble Road,
finding relatively few migrants: 2 each of Western Tanager and Willow and
"Western" Flycatchers and single Yellow Warbler and Black-headed Grosbeak.
