Hi All,
Monte Bello Preserve's Gate 5 was exactly on the
fog boundary this morning 10/30/2006. Generally I've found that this is a good
circumstance for birding as birds in the fog zone are tempted to scoot
over to the sunshine nearby, making for a nice concentration at the boundary. It
was very birdy for the first few minutes, but then the fog took over and things
quieted down a lot.
Two Lawrence's Goldfinches were present throughout
my 1 hour visit starting at 7:45, as were a handful of Lessers. These two
individuals were both males. When I first saw them they were in their favorite
dead-toppped willow, but as I waited quietly they dropped down into the
cattails and fed below me at a distance of as little as 15 feet. At times they
fed near the other goldfinches in some thistles and other tall weeds on the bank
opposite from the willows.
Two Soras and a Wilson's Snipe were still present.
Numerous Varied Thrushes could be heard calling from the woodland nearby, but I
only got a good look at 1 when he visited the wilows for a while. Purple Finches
were fairly numerous, including a flock of 9. Band-tailed Pigeons are working
over the madrone berries up there; today I had 65 but in the past couple of
weeks I've seen as many as 180 together. Five Yellow-rumped Warblers were the
only warblers present today.
