Today 10/29/06 at 2PM, I saw what looked like an oversided Kite hovering above Mallard Slough near the point where the EEC entrance road turns north. I realized to my
surprise that it was an OSPREY. As it started flying west across the road toward New Chicago Marsh, I frantically grabbed my camera and managed to get a relatively close shot of the bird overhead. http://flickr.com/photos/30419272@N00/
In then landed at the edge of the water in the south-east corner of the marsh, then took off, splashed into the water and came up with an undetermined prey item.
Then it flew back across the slough and landed on the top of a tree just across the slough.
Since the pic allows a view of the necklace, have to ask the question – is there anything about this bird that would indicate male vs. female?
