After Gordon and Jeannie left the Guadalupe River Trail I spotted a Sora from the east side of the Guadalupe River Trail. Two pair of No. Shovelers arrived and I found my favorite sparrow, a Lincoln's.
As I walked along the back of the water district I suddenly heard the whir of wing beats and found myself in the midst of a strike by a Merlin. It was after a sparrow or some small bird which managed to stay a constant three feet ahead of the Merlin. My heart was pounding as they zipped around me twice flying low over the trail. After a short chase the Merlin gave up and perched for a few seconds before flying off. I've never observed an attack of such intensity. On a lighter side, I watched as a D.C. Cormorant tried to choke down a fish as big as he was. He tried half a dozen times before wisely giving up.
