I started (a bit late) this morning at Sunnyvale Baylands Park. As
expected, there was a large number of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERs of the
Audubon's type, and also quite a few Kinglets. The latter included
a group of about 4 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETs, in and near the double
row of cottonwoods to the right of the entrance. Warblers included
at least one Myrtle, a TOWNDSEND'S WARBLER, and (heard) COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
Sparrows included LINCON'S SPARROW.
Next to the area along Felter Road where I think Bob must have had
his feeding Prairie Falcon, but no luck with that; just 13 WILD TURKEYs
near the road. I later saw another 16 on Marsh Road (literally "on").
By the time I got to the Sierra Road summit, things were pretty quiet;
I could see and hear some HORNED LARKs moving in the distance, uphill, but
overall not much activity. On the way down, I stopped at the Spring
Valley area of Ed Levin Park. The pond had a BELTED KINGFISHER,
GREAT BLUE HERON and two PIED-BILLED GREBEs, along with the Mallards
and Coots. There was a lot of Woodpecker activity: several ACORN,
at least 1 heard-only NORTHERN FLICKER, at least 2 NUTTALL's WOODPECKERs,
and 2 RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERs. The latter were near the group picnic
tables. One of them had a much less prominent pale facial line than
the other; rather than suggest a different race, I wonder if at this
time of year that could represent a late moult stage of a young bird.
Finally, there were 2 WHITE-THROATED SWIFTs.
After lunch I checked out the New Chicago Marsh, starting with the
EEC entrance road. The OSPREY was back at the corner. The pond south
of the road had 2 (maybe 3) LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and about 9 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, plus some DUNLIN and other species. A NORTHERN HARRIER
stirred them up, but they returned. Walking out the RR tracks nearly
to the track junction, I ended up with only a dozen species of shorebirds.
But this included the 2 RUFFs still at the last pond on the left -- my
comments on them would be similar to Mike Mammoser's and Bill's.
