[SBB] 10/28/06 Anderson and Coyote Reservoirs

Hi all!

Today, I birded Anderson and Coyote Reservoirs.  Interesting birds that I saw are as follows:

Anderson Reservoir 9am to noon:

  1. Osprey
  2. Rufous-crowned Sparrow (with a flock of White and Golden-crowneds) - interesting here is that one was begging by making an array of fast high-pitched notes to attract parent, who flew in and fed juvenile (which looked to be fully grown).  Seems kind of late…
  3. Mystery bird - looked like Say’s Phoebe in my nanosecond 50 yd. view and flew like flycatcher as if left and returned to mid-tree perch but was making the phitz, beew call.  I can’t recall who makes this song and my book doesn’t specify this song for any of the Flycatchers.  Can anyone clarify for me?  Thanks!
  4. Band-tailed pidgeons - 16
  5. California Thrasher
  6. Warbling Vireo - song only and I could be wrong
  7. Cecar Waxwings
  8. Purple Finch
  9. Belted Kingfisher
  10. Hutton’s Vireo - many
  11. Ruby-crowned Kinglet - many
  12. Townsend’s Warbler - 2
  13. White-breasted Nuthatch - 2 +
  14. Northern Harrier
  15. Red-shouldered Hawk
  16. Western Meadowlark (at the Malaguerra Ave. entrance to Coyote Creek Park)

Coyote Reservoir 12:45pm to 2:45pm

  1. California Gull - 1
  2. Black-necked Stilt - 27+
  3. Long-billed Dowitcher - 154 +
  4. Dunlin - 1
  5. Least Sandpiper - 10+
  6. Wilson’s Snipe - 6+
  7. Ruddy Duck - 6
  8. Gadwall - 2
  9. Merlin - 1
  10. Yellow-rumped Warbler
  11. Rock Wren - 2 - They were happy to see me and followed me all along the damn as I poked my way along.  I had many close-up views!

Had a day total of 60 species in 5.5 hours which tells me fall is in full swing… Happy Birding!
