Folks:
Mid-morning to afternoon, 10/27/06, I visited New Chicago Marsh. On
the pond south of the RR junction I saw two basic-plumaged
RUFFs. Although I did not obtain good comparisons with other
shorebirds, I believe both were females. Their legs were dull, which
suggests that they may be HY birds. Both walked well. We have had
at least four birds this fall, but it is not certain which these
were. A LESSER YELLOWLEGS still remains along the EEC entrance
road. An OSPREY was feeding on a fish on one of the outer towers there.
Earlier, I visited Lake Cunningham, but mostly found the expected
birds. An adult male MERLIN there tolerated the many people walking
beside the lake, but was apparently spooked when I pulled out my
camera and telephoto lens--such modesty!
