[SBB] Merlin 10-27-06

I did some birding on the Guadalupe River Trail at noon and again early evening. Two Lincoln's Sparrows, a Downy Woodpecker, 2 Common Yellowthroat and dozens of American Goldfinch were seen along the trail north of Blossom Hill Rd. Close to freeway 85 fifteen White throated Swifts were observed interacting more than usual. I always see a huge old Pond Turtle sunning himself on a log and try not disturb him.

North of Coleman Rd. eight Wilson's Snipe were huddled together on a spit of land seen from the west side of the bank behind the water districts maintenance yard. The water level has risen again, so they may not be around much longer.

A beautiful Merlin was perched in the large Sycamore tree at the north east corner of the water district property. His tail was banded and was white at the tip. Common Yellowthroat, White and Golden crowned Sparrows, Black crowned Night Heron, and a Green Heron were seen here along the river channel.

The previous evening there were eight Ring-necked Ducks on the water districts main pond but they were not seen tonight. A W. Meadowlark, a first for me at this location, was viewed at close range. Dozens of D.C. Cormorants were flying in from all directions to roost in Sycamore trees for the night. The parking lot oak trees were filled with chipping Yellow-rumped Warblers. Several adult Nutmeg Mannikins were seen at each location.
