couple of follow-ups for the group for closure:

It was confirmed as an eared grebe.

There seems to be general agreement I was hearing an American wigeon.
I checked my photos and didn't see one, but it was far out on the
pond, and I've done some online research, and I'm comfortable that
this is correct.

This one generated some early excitement over the possibility of it
being a bar-tailed godwit, a real rarity in the county. After
discussion by the SBB council of gods they were juvenile long-billed
dowitchers with the beak flexed because it was feeding.

And I just want to say, for myself and for a good number of folks on
the list (who I've been able to talk to via email and on the paths as
we've met) that I (and we) are all really grateful for the time and
patience that the senior folks on this list put in to help all of us
become more informed and better birders.

And lo, though I travel through the valley of the archetypes, I shall
fear no evil, for I know that the author can't kill me off for at
least another 150 pages, no matter how stupid or trite I become, or
he ruins the book.
