[SBB] Stevens Creek north of Highway 101 - 10/6/06

All,

I birded Stevens Creek north of Highway 101 before coming into work this
morning 10/6/06. I arrived at the parula spot at 7:50am, just in time to
find out from Peggy Don that I had just missed the NORTHERN PARULA by a
few minutes. The hatching-year female BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER that
it had been hanging around with was still present though, although it
flew to the north a few minutes later. I later refound what was probably
the same Black-throated Gray Warbler in the cottonwoods at the northwest
corner of the Moffett housing complex (where the concrete fence ends)
with a large flock of insectivores.

Late-season migrants are increasing in number, with 3 NORTHERN FLICKERS,
6+ RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 11 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, and 8 HERMIT
THRUSHES found today. Other migrants included 7 "WESTERN" FLYCATCHERS (2
PACIFIC-SLOPE by call), 2 HOUSE WRENS (same birds north of the lone
eucalyptus and near the Crittenden Lane bridge), 1 ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER, 5 YELLOW WARBLERS, and 2 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS. Two adult male
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were unexpected along the creek this late in the
year. The pair of ORANGE BISHOPS was slightly further north than before,
about halfway between the lone eucalyptus and the Crittenden Lane
bridge. Two GREATER YELLOWLEGS were flying around much of the time I was
there - they were foraging at the end of L'Avenida when I left.

An AMERICAN CROW with a broad willet-like white wing bar was along
L'Avenida. This bird was similar to those in several of the photos
mentioned in web posts made in response to Al Jaramillo's hatch-year
WESTERN GULL with a similar white stripe/pigment fault.
