All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I first saw a COOPER'S HAWK perched at the
intersection of State St & Spreckles Ave and a PEREGRINE FALCON
was on a power tower near the curve in the entrance road to the EEC.
Later we had two separate sightings of REEVES in New Chicago Marsh
[one between the RR tracks and Salt Pond A-16 near where the RR bears
to the left and twenty minutes later one in the pond near State St and
Spreckles Ave]. Neither Ruff limped but I didn't adequately note the
markings during the first sighting to determine if it was the same bird or
not. One WILSON'S and one RED-NECKED PHALAROPE were in the northern
section of the same pond. An OSPREY was in a tree near the curve in the
EEC entrance road on the far side of the channel [we also saw the same bird
there on Monday 10/2] and a HOUSE WREN was in the bushes on the
eastern edge of the parking lot for the EEC. Later we saw the continuing
CATTLE EGRET in Arzino Ranch near Los Esteros Road, a SAY'S PHOEBE
near the horse corrals and a PRAIRIE FALCON on a lamp post in the parking
lot of the Jubilee Christian Center [it had just flown through a large
flock of blackbirds and ROCK PIGEONS]. At one point Frank counted
47 BROWN PELICANS flying over Salt Pond A-16. From about 10:30 on
large groups of WESTERN SANDPIPERS flew into and landed on various islands
in New Chicago Marsh. These flocks, totaling several
thousand WESA, had a few DUNLIN in with several of the
larger flocks. For the most part the sandpipers rested as soon as
they would land [I assume that these are migrating birds]. I should
also note that one WESA that was no longer able to fly [or walk
properly, it kept falling over onto it's chest and side, sometimes after having
run a couple feet] was found on the trail along the RR tracks. No
sign of the Yellow-headed Blackbird among a large flock of blackbirds seen on
the west side of Disk Dr or in Arzino Ranch.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
