This afternoon after lunch, I found a FRANKLLIN'S GULL at State and
Spreckles. It was a first winter bird with brown wings, gray on its back and
a band on the end of its tail. White eye arcs and dark on top and back of
its head. It was quite a bit smaller than the Ring-billed Gulls with which
it was standing.
Also at this location was an albino WESTERN SANDPIPER. It was totally white
except for some light buff/tint of orange feathers where a Western's gray
should be. It would not show its bill for 40 minutes but finally popped it
out for a second -- the bill was orange/pink from this quick look. I could
not see its legs. It was resting with Western Sandpipers on an island on the
right hand side of the S&S pond, standing on Spreckles.
Saw 5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS but no Snowy Plovers.
I saw 1 REEVE (Ruff) and 1 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE near the Spreckles "hill". I
think there were 20 or more phalaropes on the Calabasas Marsh pond on 237 as
I zipped by later.
At Gold and Disk, I found a large flock of blackbird and picked out many
TRICOLOREDs along with Red-winged and Brewer's. Finally found a male
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD. A Northern Harrier flushed the flock.
Nice interlude in the rain.
