I spent most of the day driving to a soccer tournament in San Jose and
watching 2 games (the girls won and tied--so we go back tomorrow for the
same.) Before the first game started, I had 45 minutes so I drove to the
nearest park, which was Santa Theresa County Park, on Bernal Rd. I drove
to the top since you can't park and ran into IBM and Hitachi. Finally found
a picnic area with rangers doing search and rescue and had 10 minutes to
bird.
I encountered a flock of 8 SAVANNAH SPARROWS on the windy hillside. They
were in a small tree, and were very aggressive towards each other -- going
after birds near by with this very loud sound that started with a Z -- a
sound I have not heard them make before. They kept moving around the tree,
stopping then chasing each other. I have not seen these sparrows behave like
this. ??
After dropping my daughter off at home at 5, I turned around and went to
State & Spreckles in Alviso. No Pectoral SP nor Snowy Plovers. :( [where
were they at the ponds?] But I did find 2 REEVES, and EARED GREBE, WESTERN
MEADOWLARK, PEREGRINE FALCON on the power pole, DUNLINS, 1 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, GREATER LEGS, 8 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS, DOWTICHERS, WILLETS,
MARBLED GODWITS, LEAST and many WESTERN SANDPIPERS. Also a beautiful sunset
from the EEC entrance road looking back over the ponds and pickleweed -- and
a somber ride back along Disk Rd that will soon be built up.
