Hello Birders,
Last Saturday's rain didn't dampen our spirits while Cherie Long and I led a MROSD walk at Steven's Creek Shoreline OSP. Nice surprises included a trilogy of falcons: A MERLIN perched on a power tower was viewed from the Kite Flying Area parking lot; a flyby of two PEREGRINE FALCONS that emptied the power lines of pigeons; an AMERICAN KESTREL perched near Crittenden Marsh; and a second MERLIN sighting--dashing behind the Moffett structures. Other interesting observations included a lone BURROWING OWL, a soaring GOLDEN EAGLE, and three separate LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE sightings.
Sunday at Alpine Pond off Skyline: a good day for woodpeckers. NORTHERN FLICKER and ACORN WOODPECKER are usually present, but a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER and HAIRY WOODPECKER were a nice treat. Four VARIED THRUSH were perched and calling in the "osprey snag".
Drama of the day: Enjoying the antics of a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER at warbler-neck heights--1/2 hour later, a perched MERLIN devouring a similar looking Townsend's Warbler, sending yellow feathers down to Alpine Pond. Purely poignant. One final Falcon sighting: A single PEREGRINE seen near Midtown in Palo Alto zipping across Middlefield Road Sunday a.m.
Good birding!
