A field full of Savannah Sparrows were seen at McKean and Fortini Road
this morning. Many were perched on the fence and dozens more flying in
and out of the grass. A pair of Am. Kestrels, several W. Meadowlark, a
Cal. Thrasher, three Lincoln's and many Golden and White-crowned Sparrows
were seen before I decided the trail was too muddy to continue. A vocal
Raven pair flew over as I walked back to the car trying to shake the mud
off my shoes.
Next I tried the Mockingbird Hill entrance to Quicksilver Co. Park a
short distance away. At 9 am I found my little triangle route very birdy.
At the junction of Hacienda and New Almaden trail, just .1 mile from the
parking lot, I found a Tan-striped White-throated Sparrow
associating with Dark-eyed Juncos and Golden-crowned Sparrows. I refound
the bird four times walking this area!! Hairy Woodpecker, several Hermit
Thrush, a Downy Woodpecker, three Nuttalls Woodpecker and several No.
Flicker were also seen. A dozen Wild Turkeys crossed the Virl Norton
trail where I saw a Townsends Warbler after hearing its chip call.
Driving home I decided to stop and bird a portion of the Calero Creek
trail from Harry Rd. Here I found a pair of Wood Ducks, Belted
Kingfisher, several Wrentit, one Y.B. Magpie, a Say's Phoebe, another
Hairy Woodpecker, three Lincoln's Sparrows, five Western Bluebirds and a
Coyote. An adult Sharp-shinned Hawk was perched over the creek near Harry
Rd.
As I was hosing off my shoes at home I heard loud chirping and saw a pair
of Golden Eagles flying overhead. I called Lee out to see them but they
flew off to the north.
This afternoon at the Santa Clara Valley Water District the small (male?)
Osprey was perched in a Sycamore tree in the maintenance yard. Several
Wilson's Snipe remain on the west side of the river channel. The Spotted
Sandpiper was working the spillway as usual, and a very dark Merlin was
seen flying towards the east. I'll credit the recent rain for the good
birding today.
