All,
Five Rough-legged Hawks were reported crossing into S.F. from Hawk Hill during the past two days, and another was seen at Hayward Regional Shoreline yesterday, so I decided to get out over mid-day today and keep an eye skyward. Unfortunately, the weather was not very conducive to hawk migration.
A drive up Felter Road past Ed Levin Park to the Sierra Road summit netted a PRAIRIE FALCON (just southeast of the junction of Felter and Calaveras roads), 3 GOLDEN EAGLES, and a preening adult male COOPER'S HAWK. At least 31 WILD TURKEYS were seen along the road as well. A quick stop at the Spring Valley Picnic Area in Ed Levin Park turned up a TOWNSEND'S WARLER and a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER. A flock of 95 HORNED LARKS was just east of the Sierra Road summit and at least one ROCK WREN was heard here as well. Sixteen LARK SPARROWS were halfway down Sierra Road below the upper eucalyptus grove at the road bend.
A stop at the CCFS waterbird pond turned up the AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, which was also enjoyed by Kris Olson and Mike Mammoser. There was also a single PECTORAL SANDPIPER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS here. A MERLIN flew over the sludge ponds as I left.
The adult STILT SANDPIPER was with a dowitcher flock at State and Spreckles in Alviso - this now becomes the latest date that this species has been seen in Santa Clara County, beating out two previous records on 8 Nov (1982 and 1998). I managed some decent digiscoped photos of this bird today. Also here were 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and several radio-tagged and color-banded AMERICAN AVOCETS. Five LESSER YELLOWLEGS were along the EEC entrance road and the YELLOW WARBLER continues at the EEC butterfly garden.
