All,
This morning, after it quit misting, several of us got good views of
the AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER in the Coyote Creek Field Station Waterbird
Pond. Peggy Don and I also took several photos (still haven't had a chance
to review mine as my battery went dead while taking the photos so have to
recharge it). The primary extension, beyond the tertials (a good four
primary tips) and the end of the tail is impressive and the crossed primaries
beyond the tail being reminiscent of that of Gulls. We also had a
limping PECTORAL SANDPIPER (guess it's my year for gimps), SORA AND VIRGINIA
RAILS. Three stops today at the well marked (X) TRKI site (thanks
Dean) on Zanker Road failed to have the desired
effect (i.e. no TRKI :-( Pat Kenny, Roland Kenner, Peggy Don and
I then went to the pond at State & Spreckles Ave in Alviso where we had two
STILT SANDPIPERS (a full basic plumaged bird and a juvenile with retained
greater coverts and tertials as well as brightly marked yellow legs) and
two basic plumaged Ruffs (one a blue-gray legged Reeve and the other a
larger pale yellow-legged bird; most likely a male). At times the two
STSA were sleeping within inches of each other and toward the end the
juvenile STSA was feeding near the Reeve for some time.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
