[SBB] Blue Grosbeaks @ Ed Levin CP 5/2/06

I went to Ed Levin CP this morning to look for Lazuli Buntings and Blue Grosbeaks.

Just past the "dog park" on the trail up to the sycamore grove, I played a Blue Grosbeak recording.
A male Blue Grosbeak popped up on the north side of the fence line from a patch of mustard (my FOS).  He was shortly followed by a female.
As I was watching and listening to his response, I heard another Blue Grosbeak calling from the south side of the trail just uphill of the dog park area.
This is in the approximate area where the grade of the trail transitions to a steeper incline and another trail forks off.  3 Blue Grosbeaks were sighted.
Lazuli Buntings soon made an appearance (my FOS).  I ran into Mike M up at the sycamore grove area.  He had reported a Grasshopper Sparrow and Rufous-crowned Sparrows, as well as the Lazuli Buntings.  He hadn't seen the Blue Grosbeaks, but just as we started back, I played my tape again and we spotted a Blue Grosbeak on a stalk adjacent to the trail, although back lit, which immediately flew downslope.  We tried the tape a few more times, but no responses.

An Anna's Hummingbird was on a nest at the sycamore grove.  An Ash-throated Flycatcher was seen over at the Spring Valley picnic area, a Prairie Falcon was seen overhead heading east, and a pair of Loggerhead Shrikes have been along the barbed wire fence between the hang-glider area and the dog park area.  One Y-B Magpie was seen near Sandy Wool Lake.  The Wild Turkeys are quite vocal right now.
