Title: Last chance for Burrowing Owl
Survey
Dear Southbay birders
Many of you know that Burrowing Owls are declining almost
everywhere. A survey of their breeding in California was
coordinated by the Institute for Bird Populations in the early 1990s,
and another by our local Audubon Chapter in the late 90s. During
2006-2007, the Institute for Bird Populations is going to repeat the
survey using a similar format. Known breeding areas plus random
blocks will be surveyed between May 15 and August 15. Each
survey block is 5 km on a side. It must be visited at least once
during the survey period to check for owls. There are 32 survey
blocks in Santa Clara County. Volunteers in other adjacent
counties are also welcome. Since there were no owls found along
the coast in previous surveys, the coastside will not be
surveyed.
This is a call for volunteers. If you can help
survey BUOW during this period, please contact me at
[[email protected]] this week. I have volunteered to the the
local coordinator.
Our first training session lead by Bob Wilkerson of IBP will be
held at McClellan ranch park on Wednesday, April 12 at 7:30
p.m. Please let me know if you are planning to come.
