I, too, decided to take a better look at my Gold
Crowned Sparrows, of which I've had many this winter.
All that had their beautiful gold crowns, also had the
white stripe behind the gold. I'd never noticed that
before!
The Fox Sparrow that has been here all fall and winter
remains. This bird will have no weight problem with
all the exercise jumping and scratching that it does.
The quail have not dispersed yet, we still have about
30 feeding twice a day. Juncos have been regular
visitors and I expect they will nest in the area once
again. The Chicadees are most likely nesting in the
nest box in our Birch tree. The hummingbirds have
obviously been feeding young as the feeder empties
sooner than usual and I haven't seen the Hooded
Orioles yet. Although, the Chicadees also use the
hummingbird feeder often so that could explain it.
I've had both male and female Spotted Towhees lately,
too.
My big surprise during a heavy rain a couple of weeks
ago, was seeing an immature Golden Eagle fly up from
the undeveloped park area at the back of our house and
head off south to the foothills. The appearance of
such a huge, dark, 'backyard' bird excited me, but at
least I was lucid enough to see the white patch under
the tail. No vulture THIS!
