I birded along the Guadalupe River Trail from Blossom Hill Rd. north to
hwy.85 late this morning. Almost immediately I heard a singing
Yellow Warbler but couldn't find it. Cliff and No. Rough-winged Swallows
were hawking insects over the fast moving water. I had a great look at
possibly my last Lincoln's Sparrow this season. I followed a pair of
Bushtits to their nest hanging over the water. They were obviously
feeding nestlings. In a Willow tree near the freeway I heard another
Yellow Warbler, and found a beautiful bright yellow male with red
belly streaks. Not much else along the trail except for Am. Goldfinch,
Song and White crowned Sparrows.
I did a quick loop in Guadalupe Oak Grove Park this morning. It was quiet
compared to a few days ago. I didn't see one Hermit Thrush or Yellow
rumped Warbler!! The Band tailed Pigeons were still roosting and looked
soaking wet. At the junction of three trails on the south west side of
the park I found one Chipping Sparrow feeding on the ground and
heard another in a near by tree. I waited for a while but a constant
stream of people kept them away. I heard a racket and spotted a Scrub Jay
and Cal. Towhee fighting. On closer look I notice a crude grass nest in
the brush about 3 ' off the ground near the Villa's fence. Finally, a
CATO nest. I'm not sure if the SCJA got the eggs but I'm betting he did.
