I stopped by the Baylands on the evening of April 27. Tide was out; no sign
of gulls. As I was scoping the ducks/peeps from the parking area nearest to
the visitor center, a family drives up. Father gets out to bird. In about
10 minutes, the 10 year old boy jumps out of the car, binoculars in hand,
exclaiming that he just saw a gull with a black head and red bill fly by!
We can't find it, but he picks out Franklins or Laughing Gull from Sibley's
book on his own. Pretty soon I lower my scope for him to see a Long-billed
Curlew, and he is correctly identifying every duck and bird out there. So
watch out for Scotty when he comes to bird. He's hot! And, while viewing a
rare gull from inside the car is not a great vantage point from which to be
super accurate, he certainly knows birds. I really enjoyed being able to
share my scope with Scotty and his dad.

Subject: [SBB] Franklin's Gull at the Baylands
All:
On a field trip with a bunch of youngsters at the Palo Alto Baylands
yesterday we had a brief look at a breeding plumage Franklin's Gull
among many mostly Ring-billed Gulls resting near the boat dock. It
flew in a small group, and I had no chance to pursue it farther.
