All,
This morning as Frank Vanslager and I were trying to hear bird songs over
the radio "noise" coming from a work crew near the cattle guard on Mines Road
north of the junction between San Antonio Valley Road and Del Puerto Canyon
Road Frank heard a ROADRUNNER singing (if you can call it that) on the ridge
north and east of us. At one point I felt we might of had two Roadrunners
singing but in any case we eventually saw one Roadrunner as it flew down from a
conifer located about 150 feet east of the road and 100 yards north of the
cattle guard. Shortly after returning to the cattle guard we had a
silent SAGE SPARROW perched in the bare top of a tree located near the road
and about 100 feet south of the cattle guard. We watched the SASP for
several minutes as it flew from bush to bush to tree etc. A LARK SPARROW
was in the same bush at one point. Near the Fire Station, east side of the
road, Frank spotted a nice male LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH and earlier we had a
LEWIS'S WOODPECKER in a bare snag about a quarter of a mile south of the
junction. We then decided to work Del Puerto Canyon Road to the county
line (looking for Phainopepla). Just after 11305 - 11315 Del Puerto Canyon
Road as we stopped to check out a marshy area (nice pullout on the
right) we had another Roadrunner singing on the south side of the
road. We also picked up TRICOLORED BLACKBIRD in the marsh. WOOD DUCK
and GREEN HERON were spotted in a couple different ponds along San Antonio
Valley Road.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
